How We Get the House Storm-Ready Before a Family Trip

The first morning of a family trip has its own kind of joy. Kids still in pajamas in the back seat, a cooler full of snacks, a full tank. It also has its own kind of dread, and it usually arrives as a text from a neighbor somewhere around day three: "Big storm last night. Is your roof okay?"

A trip goes better when the house is ready for it. Roofers like this Amarillo roofing team see the same story every season, an empty home, a storm nobody was around for, and a leak that had days to spread before anyone noticed. So here's the routine we follow before we pull out of the driveway.

Two weeks out

Start by assuming a storm will come. If you're traveling in spring or summer and live somewhere that gets severe weather, the odds are decent that something rolls through while you're gone, and it's easier to prepare for that than to hope.

Then walk around the house and look up. Missing or lifted shingles, sagging gutters and debris piled in the valleys are all things to deal with before you leave, not after. Check inside too, because the roof tells on itself from the inside long before most people notice anything from the yard. A ceiling stain, paint peeling near the top of a wall or a musty smell in a closet can all point to a slow leak, and a small leak becomes a big one over two weeks with nobody home to grab a bucket.

If anything looks off, get it inspected. Plenty of roofers offer free inspections, and some fly a drone over the whole roof so you get photos instead of a guess. In the Panhandle, local companies like the one at https://crsroofer.com handle storm repairs and inspections, which is good to know before you actually need one.

The week before

Busy week. Clean the gutters and downspouts, because clogged gutters overflow and push water under the roof edge. Trim any branches hanging over the roof, especially the big limbs on the side the storms usually come from, since those are the ones that end up on the shingles at two in the morning. In a strong wind they swing like hammers.

Bring in the patio furniture and the kids' toys, and tie down the trampoline or take it apart. Out here, wind turns loose things into projectiles.

Then take pictures. Lots. Shoot the roof from the yard, the attic, and every room in the house. If you ever have to file an insurance claim, before-and-after photos make the conversation with the adjuster a lot shorter. While you're at it, look up your deductible and save your insurer's claims number in your phone so you can start a claim from a hotel room if you have to.

The morning you leave

Our last-minute list is short:

  • Unplug electronics to protect them from power surges.
  • Set the thermostat to a safe temperature instead of turning it off, so the house doesn't bake in July or freeze in January.
  • Think about shutting off the main water supply for long trips, so a burst pipe can't flood the place.
  • Leave a key with a neighbor you trust, ask them to check in after any big storm, and give them your roofer's number.
  • What hail country teaches you

Families in the Texas Panhandle know this routine by heart, partly because almost everyone there has a story about the year they came back from vacation to a soggy ceiling, a bucket in the hallway and a long week of phone calls with the insurance company and a roofer. Hail can show up any time from spring into fall, the wind rarely lets up, and the summer sun is brutal on everything. Roofers there see the same scenario over and over: a storm hits while a family is away, nobody spots the damage, and the rain over the next few days finds its way inside.

So if a big storm passes through while you're traveling, have someone take a quick look. When you get home, schedule a professional inspection even if the roof looks fine from the street, because hail damage often can't be seen from the ground at all. If a leak has already started, emergency tarping will stop it from getting worse until the real repair happens.

    Getting the kids involved

Kids love a job. Little ones can round up outdoor toys and carry them inside. Older kids can walk through the house taking photos for your home inventory, which they'll probably do with more enthusiasm than you would. Teens can help check gutters from the ground, or with supervision, and set up smart plugs or a camera. It turns "getting ready" into part of the trip, and it quietly teaches them that looking after a house is something everybody pitches in on.

    Coming home

Before you unpack a single bag, walk the house, room by room, even if everyone is tired and cranky and the only thing anybody wants is a shower and their own bed after eight hours in the car. Look at the ceilings. Sniff for anything musty. Step out into the yard and look at the roof. If storms hit while you were away, call for an inspection.

None of this is meant to make you worry more. It's meant to let you stop worrying. With the roof checked, the house buttoned up and a neighbor on call, you can spend your attention on the stuff that matters, like sandcastles, mountain overlooks, roadside diners and the stories your family will still be telling years from now.
